The Showers Lecture Series event, “Placemaking and the Arts: 21st Century Challenges for Christians and Their Neighbors” will take place on September 19th.
Christian theology has sometimes been guilty of being so focused on discourse; it has not engaged the creativity, practices, and performances associated with the arts. Both Christians and artists/craftspersons have become more aware of the ways God-talk intersects with placemaking. Christians are sometimes accused of instrumentalizing art. Artists occasionally display illiteracy about religious matters.
Indeed, there is plenty of mutual ignorance on both sides.
But things do not have to go wrong. Christian Theologians have worked carefully to set the stage for productive engagement about the theological imagination relating to placemaking and the arts. This Showers Lecture is a critical conversation to be having in the 21st century, a time when being “good neighbors” can be challenging.
